In 1980, the first Reduced Instruction Set Computer (RISC) prototype was developed by a research team at IBM. The 801 minicomputer used a simple set of instructions in machine language, which could be executed very fast (usually within one machine cycle). A number of major vendors now offer RISC computers. It is thought by many that the RISC is the format for most future processors, due to their speed and efficiency.
